Our Ashram

Swami Aparananda

Pronabananda Sevashram, Narendrapur

Known to devotees as Bandhu Maharaj.

Who He Is

A life given to seva

Swami Aparananda has led this ashram at Narendrapur since 1986. Devotees know him as Bandhu Maharaj.

He was formed in the monastic tradition of the Bharat Sevashram Sangha, the order founded in 1917 by Acharya Srimat Swami Pranavanandaji Maharaj — from whom this Sevashram takes its name and its spiritual inspiration. The two are distinct people and distinct institutions: the wider Order is described separately.

Spiritual Journey

The path that led here

This account is being prepared with the ashram, so that the dates and details published here are the ones its own records support.

Vision & Mission

What this ashram is for

Vision

Awakening divine consciousness

That the divine is already present in every person, and that spiritual life is the work of waking to it — in character, in steadiness, and in how one treats the person in front of you.

Mission

His Ideals

The awakening of divine consciousness

The ideals Swami Aparananda teaches come from the path Acharya Srimat Swami Pranavanandaji Maharaj set out: that an innate divinity is present in every person, and that the highest aim of a life is to realise that divinity and to let it show in how one lives.

Across decades of service he has worked to bridge the older philosophy of the East and the ordinary conditions of modern life. He has never treated spiritual life as a turning away from the world. He treats it as the means by which an ordinary day is changed.

In his teaching, spiritual education is not the imposition of a doctrine and it is not conversion. It is the work of connecting people — of any background, any culture, any age — to a divine consciousness that belongs to all of them and stands above every narrow sectarianism.

What his teaching asks for is a change of view rather than a change of allegiance: the steadiness that lets a person keep peace, and a sense of kinship with everyone, through the difficulties that come to every life.

His Work

Selfless service, and respect between faiths

If the vision is to wake a person to the divine consciousness already in them, the work of his life has been to give that vision a practical form — through writing, through teaching, and through meeting other traditions on equal terms.

Teaching

Spiritual teaching and writing

Through a long monastic life spent in many parts of India, his purpose has been to offer spiritual consolation and to carry the teaching of Vedanta. His books set difficult philosophy in plain language, so that it reaches a seeker beginning and a seeker of many years alike.

Community

A settled place for seekers

In nearly three decades leading the ashram, one of his aims has been to keep a quiet and supportive place for those who are seeking. Regular satsang, and close contact with those who come, have made the ashram a meeting ground.

Harmony

Respect between faiths

Following the path Swami Pranavanandaji showed, he holds that many paths are real. He has taken part in interfaith gatherings and in academic seminars, where the emphasis falls on mutual respect between every spiritual tradition and on the tolerance that makes it possible.

His work, in the end, is that of a patient and unassuming guide: helping people set aside the differences on the surface and find the one lasting thing they hold in common.

Living the Philosophy

Where the vision actually lands

None of the above would mean much without the daily work it produces. At Narendrapur that work is five programmes of direct care.
